School Safety for Back to School - Is Your Child's School Safe?

With Back to School upon us, we wanted to share an article about school safety and how security window film can be part of an overall solution to keep kids safe. This article was in Business Insider and is titled “Here are the best ways to protect schools, workplaces, and ourselves from active shooters.” The article talks about a variety of ways to increase school safety, and they specifically mention security window film. The article states the following in the section on the use of technology to improve safety:

“Protective and intrusion resistant doors and windows creating delays in an aggressor’s ability to gain entry. For pre-existing locations the addition of protective window film, improved locking mechanisms and/or frames as well as other reinforcement techniques can be effective.”

With that being said, we wanted to explain what protective security window film is and how it can be used to increase school safety. Security window film is typically a clear layer of polyester film that is applied to a building’s existing windows on the interior surface of the glass. The film comes in a variety of different thicknesses and can be installed in several different ways depending on the level of safety or security required. Once installed, this film will hold the glass fragments of the window together in the event of a break. As it relates to school safety and security, this film will hold glass fragments together and reduce the potential of injury from broken or flying glass in a natural disaster, an act of terrorism or inadvertent breakage.

In addition, and in the way the article was referring to, this film by keeping the glass intact will slow down or impede potential intruders from gaining access to the building and give authorities time to respond. Often, intruders are looking for the fastest and easiest point of access and because doors and gates have been fortified in recent years, the next easier access point would be through a window. That is why safety and security film should be considered as a way to fortify this vulnerability.

CNET Road Show Discusses Avoiding a Automotive Window Tinting Nightmare

No one wants to have a bad automotive window tint job. While most people do not understand all that goes into a good tint job, we all know what a bad one looks like. Recently Brian Cooley from CNET Road Show decided to look into what it takes to avoid an automotive window tinting nightmare. In the article, Brian discusses things to look for to make sure your vehicle gets an great tint job. We wanted to share the top six things mentioned in his article.

When deciding on an automotive window tinting location;

  • Look For Clean – Automotive Window Tinting starts and ends with cleanliness. Any dust floating around the place will end up permanently stuck to your glass.
  • Get a Guarantee – A lifetime warranty for the original purchaser on the film and the installation should not be out of the question.
  • Look at References – Have the shop show you a car they have done. Inspect it for edge to edge coverage, no bubbles or dirt trapped in the film and edges that aren’t lifting.
  • Don’t Sweat the Wet – Know that the inside of your car is going to a bit wet in the process. It’s OK, it’s less water than it looks like and a good tint shop knows where – and where not – to let water drip.
  • Let it Cure – It will be anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, depending on temperature and other factors before you can put the windows down. New tint needs to breathe out all the moisture it was applied with.
  • Clean it Carefully – Tint is applied on the inside of glass. Once tinted, clean the tinted surfaces with a non-ammonia glass cleaner so you don’t break down the film’s scratch resistant coating.

Are You Practicing Sun Safety and Protecting Your Skin While Driving?

Spring has finally arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana and as a way to honor May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to share this important sun safety information with you. Did you know drivers in the U.S. have a higher rate of skin cancer on their left side due to exposure while driving? Practice good sun safety by having a UV blocking window film installed on your vehicle. In fact, The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends window tint as part of a comprehensive skin care program stating,

“The sun’s ultraviolet radiation is associated with most cases of skin cancer, which will affect one in five Americans over a lifetime. UV radiation reaches us in the form of shortwave UVB and long-wave UVA rays, but glass blocks only UVB effectively. Although car windshields are partially treated to filter out UVA, the side windows let in about 63 percent of the sun’s UVA radiation; rear windows are also unprotected, leaving back seat passengers exposed. There is, however, a solution. Transparent window film screens out almost 100 percent of UVB and UVA without reducing visibility, and is available in all 50 states. If you have window film installed, remember that it protects you only when the windows are closed.”

Reduce Operating Costs and Adopt Green Building Tech with Window Film

Reduce Operating Costs and Adopt Green Building Tech with Window Film

Reduce Operating Costs and Adopt Green Building Tech with Window Film

We recently came across an article on Ecopreneurist that discusses how window film can be part of your business embracing green building technology to cut business costs while going green. Most business and building owners would like to adopt green building strategies as it is beneficial for the environment, but the cost of many of these technologies are often prohibitive when taking the bottom line into consideration. This is what makes commercial window film so attractive. This technology not only helps a building operate more efficiently, it often pays for itself in just a few years through utility cost savings.

As the article states, “When window tint is applied to a building it forms a protective barrier from many unwanted elements. On top of rejecting virtually all incoming UV light (a health benefit in its own right), tinting is also highly effective in heat absorption. Films are capable of absorbing up to well over 60% of incoming heat. When this happens, the propensity for cooling your buildings interior is all but certain to decrease. That, in turn, works to effectively slash energy costs for the business. While reduced energy costs might add to your businesses’ bottom line, it profits the environment as well. With less energy usage, more emissions are saved from being released into the atmosphere. While emissions saved by one business (alone) may not be enough to save our environment, collective action may bring us incredibly closer.”

It is certainly understandable that any business needs to keep an eye on the bottom line. With that in mind, in 2018 it is also important for any business to take steps to operate in an environmentally friendly way when possible. As the article continues, it states “it’s time for companies to take more action towards being environmentally sustainable. Window tinting offers a grand opportunity for just that. Unlike most eco-friendly activities, tinting provides direct, tangible savings on the balance sheet. As companies continue to tighten their belts, and consumers become more eco-conscious, the backdrop may be set for something truly incredible.”

How Security Window Film Helps Increase School Safety

How Security Window Film Helps Increase School Safety

How Security Window Film Helps Increase School Safety

As a result of the unfortunate events of the past weeks and several years, there is an increased emphasis on school safety. Most notably, discussing what steps can be taken to avoid these types of incidents from occurring in the future. A recent article in District Administration entitled “Building Blocks of a School Security Plan” discussed strategies that can be implemented to improve the safety of a school. One of the items discussed was utilizing Security Window Film to make it harder for someone to forcefully enter a school. The President of the United States also recently mentioned hardening of school facilities as one of the solutions. As the article states:

“Make your building perimeter harder to penetrate.

If you already have locks on your outside doors, the next item you should consider on your list is security film for your windows. After the doors, the next obvious place a person with bad intentions will try to enter the building is through your windows. Security film maintains the integrity of the window, even if the glass is broken. It helps to hold the glass in place, acting as a screen that is difficult to breach, even with a sledge hammer or baseball bat. I believe that simple is better. Make sure that your plan is based on principles such as distance or time. Ask yourself, Does this security device offer my community additional time by delaying the threat?”

To read this article in its entirety, click HERE.

One of the best things about a security window film is that, when installed professionally, it can be hard to know that anything is even on the glass. This serves to buy authorities even more time to respond as a typical would be intruder does not expect the delayed entry that the film produces. In these situations, every extra moment counts and security window film delivers additional time.

How Can Window Film Be Part of a Healthy Lifestyle in New Orleans?

Screen Shot 2018-01-26 at 11.29.40 AM

Many people begin a new year with a resolution to live a more healthy lifestyle. People begin things like new exercise programs and start being more conscious about what types of foods you eat. Just look at how the organic food industry has exploded as people understand the negative impact that certain things can have on their overall health. However, like most things, making good choices usually happens once someone has good information regarding why they should make those choices. Our team at Snappy Tint wanted to share some good information with New Orleans and the surrounding areas about healthy lifestyle choices as it relates to sun exposure and how window film can help.

In 2018, most people understand the risks and dangers of overexposing their skin to the sun’s UV rays, many are unaware of how much and when they are being exposed to them. Subjecting yourself to these UV rays without proper protection can lead to premature aging of the skin and the potential for skin cancer. Most people are likely wearing protective clothing and some type of sunscreen when enjoying the outdoors. However, have you ever thought about the exposure you are getting in your car or sitting beside windows at work and in your home? Most people don’t consider the exposure to these harmful UV rays when they are behind a piece of glass.

This is precisely why window film can become part of a healthy lifestyle. Even though you are behind a piece of glass, you are still being exposed to the UV rays that you need protection from. Applying a window film to that glass can block these rays from getting through. Window films have been given The Skin Cancer Foundation‘s Seal of Recommendation. This is what they had to say in a recent article:

“While it’s understood that taking sun safety precautions is important outside, few people realize they can sustain sun damage indoors, too. While both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun can harm the skin and lead to skin cancers, UVB is effectively blocked by glass. However, at least 50 percent of UVA rays can pass through windows. Window film is an increasingly effective solution, offering substantial indoor protection by blocking up to 99.9 percent of UVA radiation. Although they are less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent and are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year. Window film can help prevent harmful UVA rays from damaging your skin.”

    • Protection From Dangerous UV Rays – While most of us would not think about spending a significant amount of time in the sun without sunscreen, we expose our skin to dangerous UV rays in our cars each day. How to Properly Care For and Clean Automotive Tinted Windows

How to Properly Care For and Clean Automotive Tinted Windows

How to Properly Care For and Clean Automotive Tinted Windows

One of the most common questions we are asked regarding window tint is the proper way to care for and clean automotive tinted windows. As a result, we wanted to write a brief article that explains the do’s and donts of tint care.

To begin, let’s discuss a bit about window film construction and how it adheres to the glass. As you likely know, window tint is installed on the inside surface of the glass. The construction of tint is such that once installed the outermost surface is a durable scratch resistant coating. This is what allows film tint to slide up and down in a properly adjusted roll down window channel for years without getting scratched. Although this surface is durable, it is not indestructible. Also, the window tint is adhered to the glass with a thin, optically clear pressure sensitive adhesive. Once cured, this bond should last for many years without fail. Now that we understand a bit about how the film is constructed and how it is adhering to the glass, let’s get into how to properly care for it to ensure long life.

Is Any Glass Cleaner OK?

In short, no. The type of adhesive that I mentioned is used to adhere the film to the glass and it creates a mechanical bond between the film and the glass. Certain chemicals can degrade this mechanical bond and cause the window tint to bubble or peel. Many times you may see a window film job that has a bunch of large bubbles and think that it was a bad tint or a bad tint job. While it may have been either of those things, it could also have been a quality tint that was installed properly that was cleaned using the wrong type of cleaner. There are so many cleaners on the market that we cannot possibly discuss each one individually, but the main thing to look for is an AMMONIA FREE Glass Cleaner. Ammonia is one of the main culprits in glass cleaners that attacks the mechanical bond of the adhesive. It will creep under the film and cause a mechanical failure breakdown between the glass and film and that is what causes the bubbles you have likely seen. Many companies make ammonia free glass cleaners, just be sure to read the label. If it does not expressly say that it is “ammonia free”, assume it has ammonia and find another cleaner to use.

What Should I Use to Wipe the Windows Down?

You want to avoid using a standard paper towel to wipe down the tint as you clean. While this is OK for other surfaces, paper towels can trap a piece of dirt between the towel and film and cause scratches. This happens because there is nowhere for the dirt particle to absorb into the paper towel, so it just gets dragged across the film surface as you wipe the window down.

The best thing to use is a soft microfiber towel. These towels absorb more solution and allow a dirt particle to sink into the fibers and away from the film surface while cleaning. Not only will these towels give you a better, steak free cleaning, they will help you avoid scratches.

Is There Anything Else?

Actually, yes. One more thing to keep an eye on is the sudden appearance of small scratches in the film going from the top to the bottom of the window. This indicates that the window guide inside the door is either out of adjustment or had dirt trapped on it’s surface. If you notice these scratches, stop using that window and get the vehicle to a mechanic to check the adjustment and guide surface. Continued use without getting this resolved will cause these scratches to get worse and the only fix will be to replace the window film.

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?

The Basics

In simple terms, window films are comprised of a thin, strong sheet of polyester laminate that is treated in variety of ways to improve the look or performance of existing windows when applied. Typically, the film is applied to the interior surface of existing windows as a retrofit. To properly adhere to the glass, one side of the film has an adhesive that bonds the film to the glass surface and the other side has a scratch-resistant coating for durability.

There are window films created specifically for everything from automotive, RV and marine applications to home and commercial building improvement applications. There are also window films designed for decorative glass enhancements and to increasing the safety and security of glass openings.

Popular Uses

Automotive Appearance & Performance

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?
Automotive window film not only makes your car stand out in a crowd, it also helps reduce the interior heat, cut distracting glare and block dangerous UV rays. There is a automotive film to fit every vehicle, desired look and expected performance.

Energy Savings

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?
Keeping a home or commercial building comfortable means utilization of a HVAC system. It is estimated that roughly 30% of the need for cooling and heating is as a result of heat passing through windows openings. Window films technology is such that it can actually act as an insulator on your window. Keeping the heat out in the Summer and helping retain the heat in the Winter. The result of this is that your HVAC system will not need to work as hard to keep the space at the desired temperature. By reducing the workload on the HVAC system, you are reducing the energy needed to keep your home comfortable.

Glare Reduction

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?
Modern architecture often features large windows. While this opens up a space, often these large windows bring with them glare issues at certain times of the day. Window films can be used to reduce glare by up to 87%, relaxing your eyes and making it easier to do things like viewing a computer or television screen. Also, because modern window films are made with ultra-clear, distortion-free materials, other than the glare reduction, your views will be maintained and you probably won’t even know the film is there.

Preservation of Furnishings

First, let’s discuss what exactly causes this type of sun damage. A common misconception is that the sun’s UV rays are what cause sun damaged floors, furniture and furnishings. While these UV rays are certainly the largest component that causes fading, as this chart illustrates, they only account for 40% of the total. Solar heat, or the heat you feel passing through your windows and the visible light streaming in are also major contributors. These account for an additional 25% each of the causes of fading. The last factor is listed as “other” as it is comprised of a variety of things that are harder to control and are not major overall contributors. These are things like interior lighting, humidity, etc.

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?

One of the first things you might realize from this chart is that you cannot “stop” fading completely. The fact is that unless the item you want to protect in a dark, climate controlled room, it will typically fade over time. However, if you plan to have the flooring and furniture in a place that will be exposed to these elements, the most you can do is attack the major contributors of fading. By significantly attacking these contributors, you can slow down this fading process and extend the life of your floors or furnishings. For these reasons, one of the best ways to attack the primary causes of sun damage and fading is with window film.

Add Decorative Element or Branding to Glass

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?
Installing decorative window films to glass can provide privacy for the occupants of the space. The possibilities are nearly limitless as decorative window films come in frosted, tinted, or colored window film at various opacity levels to get the privacy you need without sacrificing natural light. In addition, decorative window films can be used to display company branding or to customize your space with unique designs, prints, or patterns, including styles that resemble cut or texturized glass. Finally, these films are easy to clean, durable and can be removed easily and inexpensively without damaging glass.

Safety & Security

What are Window Films and How Can They Be Used?
It probably is no surprise to you that windows are the most vulnerable parts of any building. They represent easy points of entry for people who may mean harm to the occupants, the building itself, or its contents. In addition, in a natural or man-made disaster, flying glass from window is often a major contributor to injuries and death. However, when professionally installed safety and security window films are added, the glass doesn’t shatter, delaying the intruder’s entrance, and preventing flying shards of glass from harming anyone.
